Commenting on a recent news article revealing drunk, distracted and speeding drivers to cost injury victims and taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars each year, Hartford accident lawyer Joe Morelli of the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone & Morelli said today these statistics serve as an eye-opening reminder of the devastating long-term financial consequences caused by reckless drivers.
Morelli based his comments on a May 29 Connecticut Post article, “Report: Car, truck crashes cost whopping $ 871B.” According to the article, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates reveal traffic accidents to amount to $ 871 billion in economic and societal harm in a single year, including $ 594 billion resulting from loss of life, pain and suffering and decreased quality of life caused by accident injuries.
“Make no mistake about it, car accidents cost accident victims billions of dollars each year,” Morelli said. “They often result in steep medical bills, expenses related to future care, lost wages and other losses. That’s why it is so important for drivers on Connecticut roads and highways, from I-95 in Bridgeport to Asylum Street in downtown Hartford, to safely and responsibly share the road with one another.”
The study examined the economic toll of car and truck crashes in 2010, in which the NHTSA reported 32,999 motor vehicle fatalities and 3.9 million injury cases, according to the article. Of the total price tag, $ 277 billion – or nearly $ 900 per person across the United States – was attributed to economic costs, the Post reported.
According to the article, the NHTSA found $ 594 billion or roughly two-thirds of accident costs involved accident-related injury expenses and other damages suffered by victims. This included $ 199 billion in alcohol-related accidents, $ 210 billion in speeding accidents and $ 129 billion in accidents caused by distracted drivers, the Connecticut Post said.
“The toll that drunk, distracted and reckless drivers take on accident victims goes far beyond the numbers,” Morelli said. “Behind these staggering figures are people. Behind these numbers are thousands of accident victims in Connecticut whose lives may never be the same again. Drivers who are careless or reckless and cause accidents need to be held accountable for their actions.”
Morelli said people involved in accidents due to somebody else’s negligence may be entitled to compensation to pay for their losses. He said an experienced Hartford accident attorney can help protect the rights of the injured and families who have lost loved ones.
